Nursing Week 2019
This year we celebrate International Nurses Day with the theme of looking at the nursing voice from the perspective of Health for ALL.
Health for all proclaimed in the Declaration of Alma Ata on September 12, 1978 also boldly stated, ‘Health is a Human Right.’ Forty years later, the message contained in the declaration is still relevant.
At Dr. Bernstein Diet & Health Clinics, our nurses support our patients as part of a multidisciplinary team, that take into account the mental, psychological, social, and cultural determinants of health and weight loss.
Dr. Bernstein Diet and Health Clinics has established its reputation for success and integrity and innovation in the field of weight loss and the study of obesity. This success would not have been possible without the support of our front line key players like NURSES, MEDICAL and ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF.
On the commemoration of International and National Nurses Week, we would like to salute the nurses for their dedicated service to the organization. Additionally, we would like to acknowledge the staff for influencing our patients with their commitment. Thank you!
Back to topAdministrative Professionals Day!
Administrative professionals have diverse roles whether as executive assistant, secretaries, receptionist or clerical staff – their task is vital as they are the backbone of the people they serve and the organization at large.
“Administrative Professionals Day” is celebrated around the globe on the last Wednesday of April, in honor of these professionals. On this day, employers show their appreciation of the work carried out by these administrative pros and highlight their importance.
At Bernstein Diet and Health Clinics, we would like to take this opportunity to recognize all medical receptionists at clinics and administrative staff at head office for their dedicated service.
We appreciate all that you do for our patients, clients, and customers.
Our success would not have been possible without the support of our frontline key players!
You touch so many lives everyday…
Thank you!
Dr B's Myth or Fact
MYTH: Overweight People Simply Eat Too Much.
FACT: There can be complex medical reasons why people gain excess weight.
- Inherited genetic characteristics (if both your parents are overweight you have a good chance of developing the same problems).
- Glandular disorders of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal and reproductive systems.
- Effects of certain medications such as cortisone, antidepressants and hormones.
- Metabolic disorders such as diabetes or hypoglycemia.
- Psychological factors.
Our doctors are trained to treat the underlying chemistry and fix the abnormal hunger and cravings.
MYTH: You need to exercise to lose weight
It’s no myth that regular exercise is a important part of a healthy lifestyle, and the benefits are too numerous to list here. But how important is exercise in losing weight? If you’ve spent time on a treadmill with a calorie counter, you know that after an hour at a moderate pace, you may have expanded 180 calories – the equivalent of an apple. With 3,500 calories in a pound of fat, it would take about 16 hours on a treadmill to burn those off. And, not all calories will be from fat.
However, the normal body processes of just living and breathing require about 2000 calories each day.
This diet process release at least 3000 calories from your fat cells every day in the initial form of ketones. Some of these are used by your tissues as food and energy. Some are excreted from the body. If you exercise, you will burn some of these calories and excrete less. Exercise in this case, will not produce a greater weight loss. So, with or without exercise, you should lose 4-5 pounds every week.
Some patients are unable to carry out much exercise because of their associated medical condition but may be able to participate after losing some weight. Discuss this with the doctor before starting a new exercise routine. If you already are involved with exercises, you should be able to continue, and with better performance while on this diet. Please inform us of your activity level, as me may adjust you food or vitamin intake.
FACT: Our rapid weight loss programs typically cost thousands less.
Cost shouldn’t be a health issue, but the reality is that, pound for pound we have one of the least expensive programs available. It’s about one third of the cost of many commercial programs and about 15 times more effective.
Back to topGetting the most from your program; Get to your goal weight
Every patient has their own unique motivations for wanting to lose weight. Likewise, every patient comes in with their own ideas of how much weight they want or need to lose. But often, this is different from what we recommend to our patients as their Ideal Healthy Goal Weight, and they may fear that they cannot achieve that goal.
Medically speaking, your Ideal Healthy Goal Weight is that weight at which your body has lost all of its excess fat. There are numerous benefits to reaching and maintaining your ideal healthy goal weight;
• Without any excess fat, your body’s organs and processes are operating optimally.
• Maintaining a healthy weight reduces your risk of developing weight-related health complications.
• It is easier to maintain your ideal healthy weight over the long term and prevent rebound weight gain.
• Preventing rebound weight gain saves the stress and expense of repeated weight loss attempts.
Keeping these important benefits in mind, do not settle for “almost” getting to your goal, and do not sell yourself short on what you think you can accomplish. Most of our patients are astonished at how much better they look and feel as they progress through the program, and periodically re-evaluate their goal as they see how easy it is, and build confidence that they really can do it.
You can feel rest assured that our experienced team of nurses and doctors will work with you, one-on-one at every visit to keep you on track, feeling well, and motivated all the way to your Ideal Healthy Goal Weight.
Remember, you can visit the clinic up to 5 days per week (Monday to Friday) if you feel that you need or want the extra support, at no additional cost above the regular 3 visits per week.
*Individual weight loss may vary. Call for details. Compliance with our program is required.

We Want to Hear from You
Feedback from our patients is very important to us. It helps us gauge our ongoing performance and identify opportunities for improvement. We have recently launched a new, ongoing Patient Survey that you can use to tell us how we are doing.
You will receive one survey per week, sent by email, following your visit to the clinic. The survey will ask you to rate your experience at various stages of your visit and provide any comments or suggestions you may want to offer. All responses will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used internally for this purpose.
Please look for these emails in your inbox and complete them at your earliest convenience. If you do not receive the emails, please check with the clinic staff to ensure that we have your email address on file.
Thank you!

Back to topTips for Using the Bernstein Diet Mobile App
The Bernstein Diet Mobile App is here to help track your weight loss journey. Patients can access Recipes, Food List, Weight Tracker & BMI Calculator!
1) Weights are now uploaded directly from the clinic
Now you don’t have to enter your weights manually any longer. The weights will be automatically uploaded to your profile directly from the clinic after your visit.
2) Food/Recipe Filtering
If you have any personal dietary restrictions or allergies, you can specify these in your Settings. When browsing the food list and recipes, you will only be shown items which are compatible with your restrictions. When viewing an individual food list item or recipe, you can also use the three-dot menu to hide it from view if you don’t like it (which can be undone in your Settings).
3) Favourites
You can use the three-dot menu when viewing any food list item or recipe to add it to your Favourites list. You can go to the Food List or Recipes areas of the menu to see your list of favourites. If you navigate further into the food list categories before opening your favourites list, your list is filtered to show items belonging to the category you opened it from.
